Report: Calgary Flames Re-Sign Defenseman Anton Babchuk to Two-Year, $5 Million Deal

When the Flames acquired Anton Babchuk from the Carolina Hurricanes in November, they had visions that he would be a stabilizing force on their blue line. He proceeded to impress them so much during his 65 games in Calgary that they decided to reward him with a new deal. The Flames inked Babchuk to a two-year deal worth $5 million on Sunday, according to TSN.ca. Calgary general manager Jay Feaster said that he is pleased with the chemistry that Babchuk has brought to the team. “Anton Babchuk is a sound positional player on the back line and perhaps one of…

Calgary Flames re-sign defenseman Anton Babchuk

The Calgary Flames have re-signed defenseman Anton Babchuk to a two-year contract extension worth $5 million.

The 27-year-old played in 65 games with Calgary last season after coming over in a trade from Carolina along with Tom Kostopoulos.

Babchuk had 11 goals and 24 assists and was a team-best plus-14 with the Flames. He added eight points in 17 games with Carolina.

Monday’s deal will pay Babchuk $2.5 million a year.

A first-round pick by Chicago in 2002, Babchuk has played 250 career NHL regular-season games, with 34 goals and 62 assists.

His best season came in 2008-09, when he had a career-high 16 goals for Carolina.

Anton Babchuk nearly off the market

We’re running a little “light” today due to the Fourth of July holiday, so here’s an intriguing tidbit from Pro Hockey Talk’s James O’Brien: the most intriguing defenseman remaining on the market who doesn’t have big question marks attached to him will remain with the Calgary Flames, according to his agent, Jay Grossman:

Anton Babchuk near completion on 2 year deal with #Flames…..

Update: Make that officially off the market, per The Fourth Period, and the Calgary Sun’s Eric Francis also says that the deal’s nearly done:

I can confirm the Flames have now signed Babchuk to a 2-year deal. Done deal.

Update #2: The Calgary Flames are confirming the deal: 2-years at $2.5 million per season. The Flames are obviously banking on Babchuk’s potential and as such, they re-signed him at a very nice price.

Flames re-sign Ukraine native Anton Babchuk

NHL Hot Stove Staff
According to Rogers Sportsnet report Roger Millions, the Calgary Flames have inked defenceman Anton Babchuk to a new two-year contract. Terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed, but this is good news for the Flames back end. After recently trading Robyn Regehr to the Buffalo Sabres, Flames GM Jay Feaster knew that re-signing Babchuk was a must to keep some of the core together.

Acquired early in to the 2010-11 season, Babchuk put up solid numbers with the Flames, scoring eight goals for 27 points in 65 games with Calgary, it’s also worth mentioning that he was a plus-18 on a team that didn’t even make the playoffs. His season totals were 11 goals in the full 82 game season with both the Flames and Hurricanes. Over his 250 career NHL games the Ukraine native has 34 goals for 94 point — his best year came in 2008-09 with the Hurricanes where he scored 16 goals in 72 games.
During the 2007-08 season, Babchuk played in Russia with Omsk …

Flames offering 9 years, $64 million for Richards?

Center Brad Richards, considered the top free agent on the market, has been offered a reported nine-year deal worth $64 million by the Calgary Flames.
On Day 1 of NHL free agency Friday, there were a flurry of signings, but none involved the Dallas Stars’ standout center.
Last week, Richards denied the Stars’ request to waive the no-movement clause in his contract, ensuring he would become a free agent Friday.
Richards collected 28 goals and 49 assists in 72 games last season with the Stars. He has 220 goals and 716 points in 772 career contests with the Tampa Bay Lightning and Stars.

Rumor: Flames Dive Into Richards Sweepstakes With Massive Offer

With the combination of
large dollar amount and long contracts being handed out the free agents are flying
off the board very quickly on Day 1 of NHL free agency, but Brad Richards is
still on the board and getting plenty of attention. Richards held a series of in person meetings
with teams and conference calls with others.

Little has come out in
terms of what the teams are offering except for Jesse Spector reporting on what
the Calgary Flames have offered:

Source: Flames offer
Richards nine years, $64 million. Other source: “He won’t go there.”

Those are crazy figures
and the Rangers should not approach anywhere near those numbers to try and
acquire Richards. For the Flames it is a
desperation attempt to add talent to a team that has failed to make anything in
the draft in recent years. It is highly unlikely Richards would sign in Calgary as their chance to win is remote, especially with an aging team that has little reinforcements on th…

Calgary Flames Summer Playbook

The 2010-11 campaign for the Calagary Flames was a disappointing one, and while the good news is that some good young players are just about ready to become NHL regulars, the bad news is that the Flames roster will be virtually identical to last year’s.
In goal, Calagry will have Kipper and Karlsson, which is the same tandem used last season. On D, out are Robyn Regehr and Steve Staios, and in are Brett Carson and recently acquired Chris Butler. That’s a downgrade if you ask me. It is assumed that Calgary will be able to bring back UFAs Adam Pardy and Anton Babchuk. Up front, the Flames already have 13 players signed, so barring trades or Nik Hagman signing in Europe, this is how they will line up at the start of the season. Calgary did rank #3 in the West in goals for, so its not a surprise they wanted to have the same group of forwards. If injuries strike, top prospects TJ Brodie (D) and Greg Nemisz (C/RW) will be able to step in and have an impact.

Potential bargain free agents

Every summer teams go bargain hunting, especially those up against the cap. Here are some players that general managers may be able to sign for cheap, much less than their actual value.- Brendan MorrisonJust days prior to the 2010-11, Morrison signed a one-year, $725,000 contract with the Flames. It ended up being a nice bargain pickup by then-GM Darryl Sutter as Morrison saw a lot of time in the top-six up front. In 66 games, Morrison had 43 points and boasted a +13 rating. This came on the heels of a similar performance in Washington the year before.Morrison isn’t going to set the world on fire, but he can certainly be a cheap, shrewd signing for any team seeking a second-line or depth center.- Marcel GocIn two years with the Nashville Predators, Goc has fit like a glove because of his versatility. He plays in numerous roles, even if you need to plug someone into the second line during an injury. In 124 games with the Preds, he has 54 points with a +20 rating – all while mak…

Shaune Vetter: Continuing the Purge

According to Calgary Sun Writer (and Flames reporter) Randy Sportak Twitter @SUNRandySportak the Calgary Flames are set to unload yet another Sutter in the immediate future as Duane Sutter, who is currently the Director of Player Personnel, was reportedly told on Sunday that he will not be brought back.

Although this must be tough news for Duane, fans in Calgary can tell you that his draft rec…

Regehr Leaves Calgary Memories Behind

From Scott Cruickshank of The Calgary Herald,

“They [Jordan Leopold, Rhett Warrener, Steve Montador] said how much they really enjoyed the city, the people, raising a family in Buffalo,â€* says Regehr, who, with wife Kristina, has one young son and another child due next month. “These are guys that I trust. There’s no reason for them to lie. They didn’t say anything bad whatsoever. That says a lot.

“It’s not a great downtown, I know that. It’s what you compare it to. I grew up in a town in the middle of Saskatchewan (Rosthern), 1,500 or 1,600 people. Anything — well, almost anything — is better than that.â€*

The Sabres had heavily courted Regehr. Lengthy talks were initiated by owner Terry Pegula, by general manager Darcy Regier, by coach Lindy Ruff.

“You could just tell that they were extremely committed.â€*

Who says 13 isn’t a lucky number?

The Calgary Flames chose well when they picked Portland Winterhawk Sven Bartschi 13th overall in the NHL Entry Draft. I know because I’ve spent the last season watching up close while his star rose ever higher and getting to know him off the ice. There is nobody quite like Sven; he’s one of a kind and I can assure Calgary fans that Portland’s small but mighty gift to the NHL will be worth the hype. By now, you’ve probably read the news, scanned the stats and looked up his WHL profile, so allow me to introduce you to some of the things you may not know about the Flames’ newest prize catch.

Flames part with Regehr, re-sign Tanguay

Robyn Regehr is leaving the Calgary Flames after more than 11 seasons, heading to Buffalo in a multi-player deal officially confirmed on Saturday.

Calgary will also send veteran forward Ales Kotalik and a second round pick in 2012 to the Sabres, getting defenceman Chris Butler and prospect Paul Byron, a centre, in return.

Regehr, 31, needed to sign off on the move per the terms of his contract. The rugged defenceman played 827 regular season games with the Flames , compiling 29 goals and 134 assists with 802 penalty minutes.

“[Asking a player to waive a no-trade] is the toughest thing that you do,” general manager Jay Feaster said. “I went through it in Tampa with Brad Richards and there was a guy that won a Stanley Cup for us.

“When you have a warrior like Robyn is, a guy who has been there as long as he’s been there and has done as much for the franchise as he has, that’s a very, very difficult phone call to make.”

Providing a steady presence on the blue-line, Regehr has missed on average just four games per season over the past decade of play. There will be at least one familiar face for him the returning Sabres ??? former Flames defender Jordan Leopold.

Kotalik is returning to the club where he enjoyed his greatest success. Since leaving the Sabres in a 2008-09 deal, he’s failed to last long with Edmonton, the New York Rangers and the Flames .

The situation got so bad in Calgary for Kotalik that he even spent time in the American Hockey League.

The 32-year-old Czech Republic native has scored 136 goals and added 148 assists in 542 career games.

Butler has played 155 games in three seasons with the Buffalo Sabres, with five goals and 31 assists and a plus-4 rating.

Byron is a skilled but small centre who spent most of his first pro season with Portland of the American Hockey League. The five-foot-nine Ottawa native got in eight games of NHL action with Buffalo, with a goal and an assist.

The Regehr deal leaves just captain Jarome Iginla and goalie Miikka Kiprusoff from the Calgary team that reached the seventh game of the 2004 Stanley Cup Final.

The transaction makes some much-needed room for the Flames with respect to their salary cap situation.

Regehr represents a cap hit of just over $4 million US the next two seasons. Kotalik is to earn $3 million next season.

The 25-year-old Butler is a restricted free agent who earned $585,000 last season.

“We’ve been in salary cap jail for some time,” Feaster said. “This gives us an opportunity to have some breathing room and have a fresh start and at the same time to get younger.”

The Flames soon after the trade announced a new contract for forward Alex Tanguay, valued at $17.5 million over five years. He was due to become an unrestricted free agent next week.

Tanguay, 32, rebounded after a couple of subpar seasons with 22 goals and 47 assists in his second stint with Calgary. He earned a career high of 81 points with the Flames in 2006-07 before eventually departing for stops with the Montreal Canadiens and the Tampa Bay Lightning.

In an NHL career that began with six seasons with Colorado, he has scored 225 goals and 460 assists in 817 regular season games with 401 penalty minutes. He won a Stanley Cup with the Avalanche in 2001.

“As we looked at the potential (unrestricted free agent) market, we didn’t see a player that was going to replace him and be as productive as we believe he can and will be,” Feaster said. “We’re happy to have him back. The earlier transaction put us in a situation where we actually able to get that done today and get it filed.”

On Day 2 of the draft the Flames selected Finnish centre Markus Granlund with the 45th pick in the draft before adding defenceman Tyler Wotherspoon of the Western Hockey League’s Portland Winterhawks at No. 57.

Granlund is the younger brother of Minnesota Wild prospect Mikael Granlund.

Wotherspoon, a six-foot-two defenceman from Surrey, B.C., had two goals and 10 assists in 64 WHL games last season.

The Flames also added left-winger John Gaudreau of Dubuque of the USHL in the fourth round at No. 104 and Edmonton Oil Kings defenceman Laurent Brossoit in the sixth round at No. 164.

What are the Flames doing? Crunching the numbers…

The Calgary Flames were fairly busy on Draft day, trading away prized defenseman Robyn Regehr, and re-signing left winger Alex Tanguay. NHLHS Calgary Flames correspondent Shahbaz Syed takes a look at the why the Flames traded Regehr, and the numbers behind the madness.

They all hummed and hawed until finally coming up with a game plan. Robyn Regehr agreed to waive his no movement clause to become a member of the Buffalo Sabres. Along with Regehr, the Flames shipped Ales Kotalik and a second round pick in 2012 to the Sabers in return for Chris Butler and Paul Byron.
The trade is but a few hours old and there have been intense discussions all around the league and amongst hockey fans regarding this dealing. Many in Calgary are viewing this trade as a significant failure; trading away one of their top defensemen and getting very little in return. Regehr is a big strong defenseman who plays solidly against the league’s best each night. There are few better shutdown D-men in the leag…

Flames re-sign Tanguay to 5-year deal

The Calgary Flames have re-signed left wing Alex Tanguay to a five-year, $17.5 million contract.

The deal was done Saturday during the NHL draft.

Flames general manager Jay Feaster says the trade of veteran defenseman Robyn Regehr to the Buffalo Sabres cleared enough room under the salary cap to sign Tanguay, who led the Flames with 47 assists in his first season with the team. He scored 22 goals.

Flames captain Jarome Iginla was eager for the team to bring back Tanguay. Feaster says the front office decided that Tanguay was a better option than any of the available free agents on the market this summer.

Tanguay will turn 32 this season.
