GARTH: ERHOFF CONTRACT OK, TALBOT’S IS NOT?

The Buffalo Sabres raised the collective eyebrows of the NHL earlier this week when they traded for the rights to soon to be free agent Dman, Christian Erhoff, and then immediately signed him to a 10 year, $40 million contract. The term was not the issue for many, as much as the distribution of dollars. The yearly cap hit for the erhoff contract is a friendly $4 million. Sabres owner Terry peg…

The Better Buffalo Sabres

from Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News, Call it a Pegulapalooza….

In short order, the Sabres have re-signed McCormick, Drew Stafford and Nathan Gerbe, while also adding Leino as well as defensemen Robyn Regehr in a trade with Calgary and Christian Ehrhoff in a trade-and-sign deal that was completed Thursday.

The Sabres are expected to be relatively quiet in the coming days, although General Manager Darcy Regier said Friday trade options will continue to be explored. For this week, the focus will be mostly on the team’s young players as the annual summer development camp will open Tuesday at Niagara University’s Dwyer Arena.

“We’re all happy,” coach Lindy Ruff said Friday. “We’ve added to positions we feel make us a Stanley Cup contender. Regehr on the back end is a big physical defender and Ehrhoff fits how we want to play. He’s a tremendous north-south skater, has a great shot and obviously can join the rush. He’s a b…

Kevin Freiheit: Leino an Upgrade Over Connolly?

So, the Maple Leafs signed Connolly to a two-year, 9.5M deal. He will be making more money than players such as Drew Stafford, Derek Roy, Robyn Regehr and Brad Boyes.

For $4.5M per year, the Sabres signed Leino, which is a bit of a risk, but I believe it was the right move. Leino is coming off of a breakout season and has played well in the postseason. As long as he can prove that his 50+ point…

Is Pegula spending money wisely?

As of this writing, the Buffalo Sabres – I repeat, the Buffalo Sabres – have the third-largest payroll in the NHL, thanks in large part to new billionaire owner Terry Pegula. In today’s free agent frenzy they made another big splash by signing Ville Leino, one of the top offensive players available. This comes on the heels of locking up Christian Ehrhoff to a long-term deal and acquiring Robyn Regehr. Not to mention, they were contenders to sign Brad Richards prior to the Leino signing. It’s safe to say the Sabres are better than they were at this time last week. With that being said, is Pegula spending his money wisely? In less than five months on the job, Pegula has spent a lot of cash, either through trade or free agency. Ehrhoff and Leino, two of best available free agents, signed long-term deals with the Sabres in a 24-hour span, totaling $67 million of contract dollars. Last weekend, Regehr and Ales Kotalik were acquired from Calgary. In February, t…
